Skinamarink is not based on a true story. The movie is about a nightmare that hunted most of the viewers in their childhood.
Kyle has a YouTube channel named Bitesized Nightmares where people leave comments about their nightmares. He then recreates those nightmares into a short film. The common nightmare that most of his subscribers faced when they were children. They were mainly between the age of 6 to 10 and their night terror would begin at their house.
The most horrifying part of the nightmare would be that their parents were either dead or missing and they had to deal with a threat that lurked around. After reading the stories about all of the subscribers he also remembered a vivid memory where he also had a similar night terror around the same age. This made him realize that this terror has been haunting everyone so he wanted to explore the thing.
He then converted the terrifying concept into a film.
Movie Ending Explained
At the beginning of the film, we see two siblings Kaylee and Kevin wake up in the middle of the night and they realize that their father is missing and the windows and the doors in the house had vanished.
The kids are not alone as there is an entity that has been lurking around the house that terrorizes the children their toys began to float in the air while terrifying whispers and voices began to grow around the house.
As the film reaches its end it is clear that non of them are going to survive. The first one to meet the end is Kaylee, the eerie voice commands her to put a knife in her eye the visual regarding it is not shown but a blood-curdling scream from Kaylee can be heard.
When a glimpse of Kaylee is caught in the camera her mouth has also disappeared. Next to meet his fate is Kevin, it is known that Kevin is hurt as the blood is splattered on the ceiling.
Kevin calls for his mother while images of people with missing heads and faces are shown. A shadowy figure appears and commands Kevin to go to sleep but before that he asks for the shadow's name but is met with silence.
Many theories regarding the film have surfaced on the internet. The most common that the viewers have been discussing on several platforms is that Kevin is in a coma as in the beginning we see him falling down the stairs. While Kevin is in a coma he is having a nightmare and he is trapped in his body.
The other theory suggests that he has a brain injury and Kevin is trying to recall bits of his memory that he remembers. As per the theory when we see a faceless Kaylee it symbolizes that Kevin doesn't remember his sister because of the injury.
