Rinat Akhmetov, the richest person in Ukraine, has a net worth of $8 billion. He made his fortune primarily through coal and energy production, controlling 60% of Ukraine’s coal and energy production through his subsidiary, DTEK. He also owns the Ukrainian football club Shakhtar Donetsk and is a member of the Ukrainian Parliament.
Akhmetov’s rise to billionaire status is controversial, with some publications alleging he engaged in criminal activities to achieve his financial dominance. However, he claims he simply took risks in the right markets at a time when privatization in Ukraine allowed for large sums of money to be amassed.
