Kristen started her television career in the early 2000s. He began working as a marketer for Merck’s pharmaceutical firm.
After a successful first date, they continued. They decided to go on another one in Washington, where Kristen worked.
She was running late for their second date. But John still had a gift for her. A crossword puzzle with a presidential theme.
After being completely floored by his gesture, she knew she had finally found her soul mate.
Their connection was based on phone calls and few visits due to her hectic schedule centered around the presidential campaign.

In June of 2017, they tied the knot at the Bellevue Hotel. Guest copies of the crossword puzzle John drew for Kristen on their second date were distributed at the ceremony, and Weekend Today cohost Peter Alexander was there to witness it.

Kristen and her husband announced they were expecting their first child via surrogacy in April 2021.
Before sharing the news, the couple shared their struggles to conceive and their IVF treatment.
“Like many people going through a similar thing, we feel very alone,” the news presenter wrote in a letter detailing her experience with infertility. Your father and I shed many tears over the ordeal but never lost hope.
They welcomed a daughter, Margot Lane Welker Hughes, in June 2021.
“Margot is true love of our lives,” the ecstatic new mother gushed to People. The joy of finally meeting her and gazing into her eyes was well worth the effort of getting there.
The happy couple has posted pictures of their daughter’s significant achievements on social media ever since birth. In June of 2022, they marked the first birthday of their child.
