Judy Carne was an English actress who achieved fame for her role on “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” from 1968 until 1973. She was born in Northampton, Northamptonshire, England, in 1939 and acted in the 1961 series “Danger Man” in Britain before moving to the United States. Carne’s other TV credits include “Fair Exchange”, “The Baileys of Balboa”, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.”, “Gidget”, “Love on a Rooftop”, “I Dream of Jeannie”, “The Big Valley”, and “Bonanza”. She also appeared in films such as “All the Right Noises”, “12 O’Clock High”, and “The Americanization of Emily”.
Carne’s most famous role was on “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” where she became known for the phrase “Sock it to me!”, which always ended with Carne experiencing some sort of calamity. Her autobiography, “Laughing on the Outside, Crying on the Inside: The Bittersweet Saga of the Sock-It-To-Me Girl”, was published in 1985 and covered her marriage, drug use, and sexuality.
Carne was married to actor Burt Reynolds from 1963 to 1965 and later wed producer Robert Bergmann in 1970, but the marriage ended one year later. She ended her acting career in the early ’90s and died on September 3, 2015.
