“Pepas” by Farruko

For starters, we’re not exactly sure what the word “pepas” means in Farruko’s homeland and within the context of this song. According to one site, it is apparently some type of drug/medicine. According to another, it is actually a Mexican slang term for a female’s reproductive organ.

Based on the context in which it is used in the chorus, if either Farruko would obviously be referring to the former. And why? This is because it seems what he is saying is that he uses “pepas” for the purpose of keeping his throat clear, being a professional musician and all.  And further along those lines this is obviously a dance song, i.e. one he is performing in a “disco”.

Indeed the vocalist prefers to ‘party every day’, including drinking, smoking, lawlessness – the full package. In fact from the time the ‘sun comes out’, his daily routine apparently includes resorting to the usage of “hookah and alcohol”.  So we know that intoxication is part of his YOLO philosophy as well as, obviously, music, in addition to regularly enjoying movies with his compadres.

YOLO! YOLO!

And yes, this track is based on YOLOism, as presented from the onset. Or as the vocalist puts it, “you only live one [life]”, so you have to capitalize on the opportunity by ‘enjoying the moment’. And to him, practicing such a modus operandi entails all of the above.

Also, part of the doctrine being put forth includes ignoring negative statements which others may say about you. Or at least that’s how Farruko responds to his personal haters, by instructing them to focus on their own matters as opposed to his own.

The Conclusion of “Pepas”

So conclusively, we can say something like this is a standard early-2020s party song. We have the homeys, the music, the drugs and the lack of care for tomorrow, if you will. The only thing missing from the well-worn equation lyrically are references to hot women.

But for all we know, based on the knowledge presented in the first paragraph of this post, maybe the title/chorus, to a native Latin American, can be read as such also.
