Georgia Rep. Mesha Mainor of District 56 said her decision came after her fellow Democrats disagreed with her opinion on school choice.
"Let's be real, parents do not want their child trapped in a failing school," Mainor said.
She will now serve as a Republican in the state of Georgia.
My name is Rep. Meisha Mainor and today I made the decision to leave the Democrat Party.
I represent a blue district in the city of Atlanta so this wasn’t a political decision for me. It was a a MORAL one.
I will NEVER apologize for being a black woman with a mind of my own.

After her announcement, Mainor thanked former Georgia Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler for a message that said she was "attacked the moment she spoke out for law enforcement and educational freedom."
"Grateful for her conviction, and her willingness to serve our state - as Georgia's newest Republican," Loeffler said.
