A construction worker lost his life in the tragic Spinnaker Sea Isle balcony collapse incident.
A tragic incident of a balcony collapsing occurred on Friday, 24th February 2023, Friday afternoon at the Spinnaker South Tower condo building located at the 3600 block of the Boardwalk in Sea Isle City.
The accident resulted in the death of a 43-year-old construction worker from Philadelphia, Jose Pereira. The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m., and Pereira was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Spinnaker South Tower is located on the north side of the complex. The collapse occurred on the building’s side, which faced the ocean. The building was built in 2008 and had 63 units.
According to reports, Pereira was working on the seventh floor when the balcony above him collapsed.
Two other workers were on the eighth floor at the time of the accident. Officials believe the workers were preparing to paint when the incident happened. The cause of the collapse remains unknown, and the investigation is ongoing.
Neighbors nearby reported hearing a loud crash followed by screams from the workers. Joye Fiocchi, who was nearby when the accident happened, said she heard the workers scream twice.
The first scream was heard when the incident occurred, and the second was the last time she heard them scream.
After the collapse, a team of engineers worked from the inside to recover Pereira’s body.
Emergency responders had to cut through approximately 12 inches of concrete to reach the victim. A concrete slab was then lifted by using heavy lift airbags. Once the concrete was lifted, Pereira was recovered.
The recovery was a delicate and complex task due to the surrounding area’s significant cracks and the slope of the balcony.
After the accident, first responders from Sea Isle City attempted to reach Pereira but determined that the building’s side was unsafe. They requested additional rescue personnel and equipment and evacuated all residents from the building.
The police statement released on Saturday said, “All of the decks on the exterior of the Spinnaker’s South Tower, near where the incident occurred, are currently being stabilized. Once the building is considered safe, further evaluations on both Spinnaker buildings will be conducted by private engineers.”
The statement did not specify how many residents were forced from their homes or where they found shelter.
The victim, Pereira, was employed by Ferguson Contracting Inc. of Yardley, Pa. The company has not released a statement regarding the incident.
The incident is currently under investigation by Sea Isle Police Detectives, with assistance from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Once the investigation is complete, more information may be released about the cause of the balcony collapse.
The tragedy has left the community in shock and mourning. The workers’ families, colleagues, and loved ones are grieving, and the residents of the Spinnaker complex have been displaced due to the incident.
