April 7, 2001: Timothy Thomas, a 19-year-old black man who has 14 outstanding warrants, is shot to death by Cincinnati police officer Stephen Roach, who is white. White's death is the fifth of a black at the hands of Cincinnati police since September 2000.
April 9: Protesters disrupt a meeting of the city's public safety committee. Protesters break windows at City Hall overnight.

April 10-11: Demonstrators break windows, set fires and clash with police. Motorists are pulled out of their cars and beaten by mobs. Police fight back with tear gas and rubber bullets. City Council meeting cancelled because of protests.
April 12: Mayor Charles Luken declares a state of emergency and imposes citywide 8 p.m.-to-6 a.m. curfew. NAACP President Kwesi Mfume meets with local officials and attends a town hall meeting to discuss police relations with black residents. Mfume later calls on Attorney General John Ashcroft to order the Justice Department to investigate.
April 13: Only minor incidents reported on second night of curfew. Safety Director Kent Ryan, who oversees the police and fire departments, askes to be relieved of his duties for health reasons. Ryan is to be reassigned in the city administration.

April 14: Luken apologizes to Thomas' family at funeral, which is attended by Ohio Gov. Bob Taft. Although ceremony is mostly peaceful, a Louisville, Kentucky, woman is injured by police bean bags as she is leaving the funeral.
April 16: Lukens lifts curfew, and announces a four-point plan to "restore trust and confidence in our community institutions, and particularly in our police department."
May 2: City Manager John Shirey resigns effective Dec. 1 after he is criticized by City Council members criticize his lack of leadership during April unrest.

May 3: Grand jury begins hearing evidence to determine whether Roach should be charged in connection with the Thomas shooting.
May 7: Grand jury indicts Roach for negligent homicide and obstruction of official business.
